About aurorahour
aurorahour is a free site about the northern lights and the night sky: tonight's aurora chance, the Kp index, aurora maps and meteor showers. It is made for adults: sky watchers, photographers and travelers in the US and beyond who want a clear answer for one place and one night, with a source they can check.
How the pages are made
We build every table, chart and forecast ourselves from open data, mainly NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service and the Kp archive of GFZ Potsdam. Each page names its source and the date the data was checked. Our own calculations, such as the Kp each place needs and how many nights a year it happened, are explained on the method page.
Who runs the site
aurorahour is an independent project, not affiliated with any government agency, run by a small team that builds free reference websites. We do not collect personal data through forms or accounts.
