3-day aurora forecast

NOAA's forecast of the Kp index for the next three days, in 3-hour blocks, and what it means for places in the US.

In short: the highest Kp in the next 3 days is 4.00, below storm level. Good for Alaska and Canada, possible along the Canadian border on the best night.

How to read the forecast

Each number is the Kp NOAA expects as the highest value in that 3-hour block. Values come in thirds: 4.67 is written 5-, 5.00 is 5, 5.33 is 5+. A forecast of 5 or more means a geomagnetic storm watch on the NOAA G scale.

The 3-day forecast is good at the general level of activity, but storms from a coronal mass ejection can arrive hours earlier or later than expected, and they can be weaker or stronger. When a storm is under way, the live Kp index and the aurora map tell you more than the forecast.
